How Often Should You Really Get a Haircut?

The honest answer depends on your hair type and the style you're maintaining, not a fixed calendar rule.

The common advice — every 6-8 weeks — is a reasonable default, but it's not universal. Short, structured cuts (like a fade or a sharp bob) grow out of shape faster and often need attention every 3-4 weeks to stay sharp. Longer, layered styles have more room before the shape looks off, and can often stretch to 8-10 weeks between trims. Hair that's colour-treated also benefits from more frequent trims, since split ends show up more visibly against a fresh colour. The simplest way to know it's time: if you're reaching for more product or heat styling than usual just to make the shape work, that's usually the shape asking for a trim, not more styling effort.
